Carina: 1983 Adams 12 sailing yacht built by Trewartha Bros. |
This Adams 12 (40 foot) was designed by Joe Adams and built in 1983 by Trewartha Bros in Warrnambool. She was named Crusader of Brighton and skippered by J Willet in the 1984 Sydney Hobart and retired due to radio and communication issues. Daryl Abrahams later acquired the boat but did not like the name. Daryl said that he had a friend who was into Astronomy and he told Daryl about the constellation Carina in the southern sky. Carina is Latin for the keel of a ship..Daryl Abrahams entered Carina in the 1988 Sydney Hobart but again the boat retired. Carina has sailed in many Bass Strait races including to King Island and Launceston.

Carina then changed hands and ended up in Tasmania, owned by a school teacher. Gavin Powell purchased Carina in about 2021 and refurbished her fully including new electronics, new standing and running rigging, HWS, toilet and holding tank, prop shaft and coupling, and then in 2025 sailed her single handed to Queensland. Along the way the engine failed and was replaced with a rebuilt long motor.
I purchased Carina in Yeppoon in Dec 2025.
